A grogger is a traditional noisemaker used on Purim made up of two parts; the handle and the spinning paddle. Attached to the handle is a knob that makes a loud noise when the paddle is spun and the knob hits the paddle. These are used to drown out the name of Haman and are generally made of plastic or wood. When listening to megillah, it is not necessary to use these but many choose to do so as it is part of the fun of Purim.
