A Mezuzah is a scroll with the words of Shema Yisrael written on it by a scribe and placed inside a case on a doorpost to almost any room except for bathrooms and closets. The mezuzah is hung on the right side of the door, towards the top of the door. When Jews pass through, some have the tradition to kiss the mezuzah as they enter or exit a room. Some say the mezuzah has the power to protect a house, and when the scroll in anyway is ruined, the house is no longer protected.
